Alfalfa Fertilizer vs. Alfalfa Fertilizer
Why is our Alfalfa Fertilizer better?
Not all alfalfa fertilizer products are created equal. It can be difficult to compare the quality of alfalfa turf products because straight alfalfa meal varies widely. Over the years, we tested many products including straight alfalfa. The results were subpar. That’s why it took three years to find the right formulation that would give us the results we were looking for.
Often alfalfa meal has a NPK of 2-1-1 (2.5-1-1.5), but may be listed as 3-1-2 because some manufacturer’s round up. Rule of thumb for most of us is that it has to be .6 or higher to round up. That’s the reason we have “more than alfalfa meal” in our product. We wanted a true NPK of 5-1-5 without any rounding up. Extra potassium is added to Omaha Organic’s alfalfa fertilizer because it is a nutrient that is quickly depleted in soil and, potassium is required to have any nitrogen uptake. We go above and beyond with the products we offer compared to what is commonly available.
UNL Organic Test Plots in Mead, NE
In 2014, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln started an organic test program to assess the impact of organic products on soil health. Our 5-1-5 alfalfa fertilizer is one of ten products that they are testing along with one plot that will receive no treatments. The products being tested are different in many ways. We joined the test plots about six months after the program started so they increased our application rates for that year to get caught up. In 2015, our product showed great results and appeared to be superior to the other products but this could still be because of the residual from 2014. We will see how it goes in the future.
Alfalfa Fertilizer with Kelp and Molasses
A huge advantage of the 5-1-5 alfalfa fertilizer that Omaha Organics offers is that it also contains kelp. Kelp contains over 60 minerals and trace nutrients. Among these are macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S), and micronutrients (Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn etc.), gibberellins, betaines, mannitol, organic acids, polysaccharides, amino acids, and proteins. For turf this means increased seed germination, increased root development, deeper root systems, increased microbial activity (which reduces thatch), increased and stabilized chlorophyll (which results in darker green colors), stress relief caused by extreme weather conditions, resulting in superior quality turf density and hardiness, greater resistance to disease, insect attack, drought and frost. Our 5-1-5 also contains soy, corn gluten meal and molasses, which is food for the microbes in the turf.
The nutrients are also homogenized in our fertilizer granules to be sure of an even distribution of nutrients when applied. Most local alfalfa meal isn’t homogenized. You can get lots of nitrogen in one area and less in another when applied. The meal is just the ground up fermented alfalfa plants. Even when straight alfalfa is pelletized, each pellet can contain a different blend of nutrients.
Roses and Gardens
Master rose gardeners have used alfalfa and kelp to produce prize winning roses for years. The bio-stimulants and nutrition contained in both alfalfa and kelp have been proven to increase the bloom set and the size of the blooms, increase the plant’s overall health and vigor, improve the plant’s heat, cold, and drought tolerance, improve its resistance to attacks from disease and insects, and increase the plants root mass. Best of all, ongoing research is showing that all flowering plants enjoy the same benefits when fertilized with Alfalfa and Kelp. Omaha Organics Lawn Care uses only the highest quality Alfalfa and Kelp in its 5-1-5 alfalfa fertilizer to ensure that we capture all of these benefits.
If you want show-stopping blooms this season remember to use our 5-1-5 alfalfa fertilizer with your plant health care programs.
