August Seeding
August Seeding
August seeding is one of the most important service we provide. Omaha Organics uses seed that is Nebraska Certified Blue Tagged. Nebraska Certified Blue Tagged seed is the best seed you can buy. Certified seed is highly recommended for every renovation. Blue Tagged seed essentially is the best of the best. This seed is tested around the country in different environmental situations. Most importantly there is also a test spot within 20 miles of Omaha which allows the seed that we use to be tested right here in our climate.
Seeding Results
Pictured above is new seed growth on bare ground from an August seeding. The seed was planted mid August and will have plenty of time to mature before freezing weather arrives. The seed on this property was drill seeded into the ground. This was to prevent the seed from washing away. On more flat ground applying a layer of penn-mulch and doing a aeration prior to seed would be recommended. This allows for the seed to make good seed to soil contact and not wash away. Each week you wait to plant seed after mid-September results in 2 additional weeks in the spring the seed will need to mature. This is no good because the summer heat will burn and kill the new seed if it is not mature.
Seed options
Seeding in the spring is never recommended. If you miss the August seeding window then a dormant seeding would be your next best option. Omaha Organics recommended Turf Type Tall Fescue for all seeding. Seeding rates for bare ground would be 8-10 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. and 5 lbs. per 1000 sq ft for established turf.
If you are unable to plant seed within the next week or two it would be best to dormant seed later this year. Give Omaha Organics a call if you are needing seed.
